3. BOOK SPECIALS:
Each year we clear the shelves to make space for the next intake of great business books. The stock we are quitting this year is as follows: Mum's The Word A great gift for any woman in your life - whether it's your mum, a sister, a grandmother or a friend. This book is a collection of the most touching stories of motherhood you will ever read. From managing cows to juggling careers - and every hug and tear in between (RRP NZ$30).
The Power of More Than One A great gift for your team. This is a collaboration of some of the most successful business people in Australasia. Just one idea from this book could make a difference to how your business gears up for whatever 2009 throws at you (RRP NZ$20).
Did I Really Employ You? This book is about to be updated and there are about 20 copies left of the original. It's written for the interviewer, not the interviewee. Since it.s first publication I have had many, many people contact me to say that as a result of reading the book and using my recruitment strategies they have saved themselves thousands of dollars and months of anguish by NOT recruiting the wrong people (RRP NZ$25). These books are going out the door at only NZ$10 each (plus P&P) but stocks really are limited SO ACT QUICKLY.

5. HAVE A LAUGH :
- Can you believe this NZ restaurant advert: WAITRESS needed. Must be 18 years old with 20 years experience!
- Or this sandwich board. MOTHERS - ready to eat - 3 for $5
- The $2 Shop is putting all stock up to $3 plus gst - which equals $3.40. THE $3.40 shop doesn't quite have the same ring.
- Apparently if you want to hide something from a man, the very best place to leave it is on the ironing board! (Just so we don't get accused of being sexist - possibly to hide something from a woman the best place might be with a man's fishing gear)
6. THE LAST WORD :
Yes the economic weather forecast is gloomy, and we can't pretend otherwise, but life goes on, and businesses will too. Some will fold, some will survive and brand new businesses will be created out of the chaos. It's called life - and maybe in this latest cycle we will learn not to get ourselves into the same old mess every 7 - 10 years. We live in hope! In our team we have witnessed the '87 crash and the Asian Crisis - we didn't die and our business became stronger because we had to be creative.
Did you know that the Chinese character for economic crisis is actually two characters - one for crisis and one for opportunity! Tenacity, courage against the odds and constant creativity are required when our backs are against the wall.
I have just read an article about the first ever touring All Black team (1888-89). The tour to Britain lasted 14 months and the team played 107 games. During one game the weather was so cold that they played the 2nd half in great coats and STILL WON! How's that for tenacity, courage and creativity?
Thanks to all the teams we have worked with in 2008 - have a great Christmas and we look forward to sharing more thoughts, tips and laughter with you all in 2009.
